The Samsung S24 Ultra Camera

In mobile photography, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has really made a comeback in the Android lineup. As an Apple user primarily, I was pretty taken aback at how good the camera was (don't kill me, I'm just being honest).

It boasts a suite of features catering to a wide range of creators — an ultra-wide camera that performs nicely in bright light conditions, a versatile zoom capability, a ton of A.I. functions to make any bad photo even better, and a 10x telephoto camera for super close details. The phone now offers two tele modules to emphasize detail and maintain a better image quality across long-range shots.

Samsung’s strategic inclusion of a 5x portrait lens directly challenges its Apple and Pixel industry rivals. The 50-megapixel sensor’s ability to offer a cropped 10x zoom at 12 megapixels positions the S24 Ultra as an adaptable tool for concertgoers and soccer moms needing to capture a subject extra far away. Combined with effective stabilization, these features are actually useful and do a great job of getting the shot.

For video, though, I do think the S24 Ultra lacks considerably compared to the iPhone 15 and 16 pro series. Despite software and hardware enhancements that yield more natural colors and improved noise reduction (something Samsung cameras have always struggled with), the S24 Ultra struggles with exposure and color stability in tougher lighting situations. This inconsistency doesn’t feel great for someone who relies on their phone to perform on all-day shoots.

Testing the Samsung S24 Ultra w/ Moment Lenses

I was pretty stoked to have tested the brand-new Samsung S24 and am eager to share some first-look test footage and photos captured with my Moment T-series mobile lenses. I romped around my hometown and Los Angeles with my best friend, Ray, who came to town from London, and the Moment team. We had a ton of fun capturing photos and mobile footage across multiple locations and scenes to offer as comprehensive a test as possible. Including the roaring sea cliffs during an intense rainstorm (lol).

Warning — we've dealt with pretty terrible weather for the last couple of weeks in Southern California, but we did the best we could do for what was given to us! Don't be alarmed if you notice the example images are more grey than usual.

Using the Camera Assistant App

Sadly, the Moment Pro Camera app, our popular mobile app to use in tandem with Moment’s mobile lenses, is no longer offered to Android users. I promise that this isn’t to leave anyone out intentionally. Our engineering team transparently lacks the bandwidth to cater to various software beasts at this time, especially since our previously crafted Android app needs a ton of updates and patience to make it as outstanding as it is for iOS. So, instead of selling a half-baked product, we are waiting until we can make that comeback in the future. Stay tuned! We love you guys, and we promise it isn’t because we’re mean or love to hate Android (although Reddit threads would love to argue otherwise).

Nonetheless, it’s important to know that the Camera Assistant app is an excellent alternative to the phone’s native camera app if you’re looking for greater manual control over your mobile photos and video. This app significantly levels up your capture experience by providing expanded access to the camera's features, including various professional modes (insert screen recording of professional modes here) and professional video settings. It also offers several anamorphic de-squeezing options, streamlining the shooting process significantly for mobile filmmakers.

After downloading, the Camera Assistant app integrates seamlessly with your standard camera app, allowing you to start using these advanced features immediately. Just open it up, and you’re ready to start shooting. Bam!

1. Moment Wide 18mm Lens

Best For: Mid-way Wide Angles, lifestyle Shots, Fuller Footage

The 18mm focal length is an evidence-based focal length preferred by every pro. It captures the entire scene without distortion or vignetting, yet tight enough to give the shot just the right amount of context.

2. Moment Fisheye 14mm Lens

Best For: Action or sports, high fashion, architecture, funky shots.

It’s worth noting that the 18mm wide lens exhibits slight vignetting due to the new S24 focal length of 23mm instead of 24mm (what we designed the T-Series lenses for, as mentioned above). The vignetting isn’t terrible, though, and can easily be mitigated with a slight crop.

Honestly, and not because we’re biased, but it looks way clearer and cleaner than the phone’s built-in ultra-wide lens. This is because the image is captured with real glass and not with computer-generated AI like Samsung loves to sport.

Photographers can capture 50mp or 200mp images with our lens rather than being limited by the phone’s built-in ultra-wide lens at 12MP. It’s a true fisheye!

3. Moment Tele 58mm Lens

Best For: Portraits, landscapes, and faraway subjects.

Moment has been making mobile lenses for nearly a decade, and the Tele 58mm has been a fan favorite for nearly a decade. It’s a lens that looks like a real lens attachment for your phone: creamy bokeh, a nice separation of the subject from the background, and realistic compression for portraits.

Again, the phone’s main camera, 10MP with an hour lens attached, provides a higher mega-pixel resolution than the phone’s built-in Tele 2X zoom.

4. Moment 75mm Macro Lens

Best For: Bokeh backgrounds, tighter compositions, sharp detail

A macro lens that continues to impress. Not quite as tight as our 10X Macro Lens for smartphones, but it zoomed enough that the detail is crisp, clear, and in focus. You obtain a greater image context than our other macro lens with a dedicated 75mm Macro focal length. This lens provides amazing bokeh, similar to a full-frame mirrorless sensor. I’m serious!

Note: Be sure to tap your focus point to ensure your subject is tack-sharp on the Galaxy.

5. Moment 10X Macro Lens

Best For: Abstract detail, super close-up images

The 10X Macro lens is a start-study allay for super-abstract macro images of texture, botanicals, and unseen details from the naked eye.

Full disclosure: although this lens is compatible, there is some vignetting around the very edges of the frame. It offers a unique, more artistic-style vibe to your image but doesn’t comply with that edge-to-edge sharpness you might want. If you seek more clinical clarity, definitely take a look at using the Macro 75mm mobile lens for your Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Additionally, the edges of the lens will be seen, so be sure to shoot at least 50mp or even 200mp. Then, when you crop the edges out, you’re still able to retain plenty of resolution.

Note: this is our only lens to work on the built-in 5x lens. And zero vignetting, either!

6. Moment Anamorphic 1.33x & 1.55x Lens

Best For: Mobile Filmmakers

These two Anamorphic lenses are the crowned king lenses for mobile filmmakers. Our 1.33x focal length is the classic, more standard point of view for videographers needing a cinematic look. In contrast, the 1.55x provides an even wider focal length (albeit with more distortion-esque framing on the sides).

Because the new focal length of the 1x lens is 23mm (1mm wider than the 24mm sensors we designed t-series lenses for), you will see the edges of the frame come into play. The best way to combat this is by cropping in 1.2x in post-production to eliminate vignetting.

If you want to de-squeeze, we recommend using the camera assistant app. Within that, you can go into the settings, desqueeze to either 1.33x or 1.55x, and save yourself an extra step in post-production.

Final Verdict

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra stands out for its all-around performance in various photo-based scenarios and will likely fire up all Galaxy lovers worldwide. Its ability to produce detailed, vibrant images across a spectrum of lighting conditions and distances showcases Samsung’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of mobile photography. Esepcially when paired with Moment's mobile lenses, the S24 Ultra's camera specs are are really leveled up, which can rival traditional photography equipment at a more competitive price.

Still, I don't think the video capabilities are as rich as what I've tested in the latest Apple series. I prefer to shoot in Apple ProRes and LOG color profiles for greater editing control and professional results.
